Wendy Muckle

Wendy Muckle has been the Executive Director of the Ottawa Inner City Health Inc. (OICH) since its beginning on February 2001.  

Wendy had been working with the homeless population since the early 1990s through her positions with the City of Ottawa and Sandy Hill Community Health Centre.

 

Wendy’s research interest are in poverty and health, homelessness, international health, HIV/AIDS, harm reduction, primary health care for vulnerable populations, nursing education, health systems management  and community based information systems.

 

Wendy has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Lakehead University and a Master in Health Administration from the University of Ottawa.  

 

Esther Moghadam

(City of Ottawa)

 

Esther Moghadam is the Manager of the Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Branch and Senior Nursing Officer at Ottawa Public Health. Her responsibilities include providing innovative leadership in managing a public health portfolio that improves and promotes the health, development and quality of life for prenatal clients, children, youth, adults, seniors and their families as well as reducing preventable chronic disease and injuries. 

 

Karen Nelson

 Karen Nelson is currently the Clinical Director of Transitional Care as well as the Chief of Social Work and Director of Spiritual Care at the Ottawa Hospital.  A graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University’s MSW program, Karen brings experience in frontline and managerial positions in the healthcare field across Canada and abroad.  Karen holds an appointment at the Carleton School of Social Work as Adjunct Research Professor where she is a sessional instructor. She also serves on the Board of the CMHA and is a member of the Executive of the Ontario Association of Social Workers.  Currently she is enrolled in the Exec MBA program at the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa

Jeffrey Turnbull

(OICH Medical Director, Vice President)

 

Dr Turnbull has been the Vice Dean of Medical Education at the University of Ottawa from November 1996 to July 2001, the President of the Medical Council of Canada from 1998 to 2001 and the President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario from November 2006 to November 2007.

  

Dr. Turnbull has pursued an interest in poverty and its effect on health nationally and internationally.  He is one of the founders and is currently the Medical Director of the Inner City Health Project for the homeless in Ottawa. As well, he has been involved in education and health services initiatives to enhance community and institutional capacity and sustainable development in Bangladesh, Africa and the Balkans.  He is the recipient of several national and international grants and awards, including the Order of Canada.

 

In addition to being a specialist in Internal Medicine, Dr. Turnbull was appointed chair of the Department of Medicine in 2001, a position he held until 2008 when he became chief of staff at The Ottawa Hospital.  In August 2010, he was confirmed as President of the CMA.  He remains committed as a medical educator with special interests in “Poverty and Health Inequity” and associated health policy.

Ann Smith

(Options Bytown)

Ann Smith is the Manager of Tenant Services at Options Bytown Non Profit Housing Corporation in Ottawa.  Ann has extensive training in delivering supportive housing services to homeless people and has worked in the supportive housing field for many years. Her experience includes a wide range of services for homeless people, including providing shelter to housing case management services to those living in the community. Ann’s experience includes the development of services to enable government and non-profit organizations to forge working partnerships to reduce homelessness and address prolific offending, improve mental health and addictions. Ann led a housing organization for inner city youth in London UK, and has worked on a national initiative to reduce the numbers of homeless people in Britain.  Ann has also led initiatives to improve the quality of service to tenants and clients in shelters and supportive housing services. Ann is currently at Carleton University as part of the Management Development Program for Women 
 

Dan Sabourin

(Youth Services Bureau)

 

Dan Sabourin is the Director of Community Services for the Youth Services Bureau. Dan has been a staff member at the Youth Services Bureau for over 24 years during which time he has successfully held a wide variety of positions within all four program sectors of the Bureau: Youth Justice, Mental Health – Crisis Services,  Employment and  Community Services.

 

The Community Services program offers street involved youth and youth living in poverty various access points into YSB services; Drop-in, two gender-specific shelters/ transitional living programs, and three supportive housing apartments. All programs encourage youth in positive life-skills development and provide support to these youth as they strive toward independent living.

 

Core program responsibilities of the Director of Community Services also include supervising and supporting activities of the five Youth Advisory Committees, HIV/Aids education/prevention program, Addictions and Health Clinic Services.

 

Dan is a key community partner and strong advocate on the issue of youth homelessness, participating on numerous community boards and networks
